Description

The Dwarf Umbrella Tree is a tropical tree with compound leaves that is very suitable for indoor bonsai. It can live with dim light and low humidity, but it must be protected from temperatures below 10°C/50°F. The Dwarf Umbrella tree is a tropical tree that is native to Australia, but it is also very common in Southeast Asia. In nature, it is an evergreen shrub with thin trunks without many ramifications. A characteristic feature is the shape of the compound, radially arranged leaves that sit on long petioles. Schefflera, produce no hardwood and no rough bark. Wiring is not a promising technique for this species, but with constant pruning, some taper and ramification can be achieved. Aerial roots can add to the character of the Dwarf Umbrella bonsai tree. The Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai likes moist soil that must not dry out. In winter it should be watered more cautiously, but if the tree is placed above a heating device, take good care that the rootball does not dry out.

Sunlight – Schefflera prefers bright, indirect light.

Watering – Water weekly during the growing season and spray the leaves frequently.

Plant Care – Schefflera requires fairly high humidity and tropical temperatures; it will suffer in temperatures lower than 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Caution – Like some other plants in the same family, Schefflera plants contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals in the from of raphides. While not a poison, per se, these crystals can cause severe irritation in the mouth and intestinal tract, sometimes lasting as long as two weeks.
